Siegenfeld, Alfred Ritter Anthony von.
Das Landeswappen der Steiremark.
Graz, Verlags-Buchhandlung Styria, 1900*
* Siegenfeld's entry: Tafel 34. 78. - 1483: a. Wappen der Herren von Berned vom Waßen. - Zu S. 114, Unm. 3, S. 124 und 213.

Originally drawn in 1483, published in Siegenfeld's book in 1900, the arms representing the arms of the Counts of Peilstein with their estates in the Salzburg territory. There is some evidence that suggests the heraldic beast on the arms of the Counts of Peilstein may have been a variation of the heraldic griffin. The arms to the left may be interpreted in a variety of ways, including a stylized black panther or a variation of the griffin form.

However, within the context of Styria, and given the source of the image is Siegenfeld's publication from 1900, the probability of these arms being a variation of the historical Carantanian arms, the panther Sable on a shield Argent, is suggested, however, with the rendering of the hind "paws" as hooves, the interpretation the heraldic beast illustrated as a panther is questionable.
